My passion lies in empowering others to make the best decisions they can for their children and their families as a whole. As a homeschooling parent of four, I not only draw upon my fourteen years of hands-on experience but also the life lessons that I learned as a child. I believe that no matter how you were raised, or how others tell you to raise your children, you need to equip yourself with what you feel you need to know to be able to raise your children to the best of your ability. No one can tell you how to do it. You alone need to find the best way to stay connected to your kids.
Background
I have drawn upon my childhood experiences in order to be a compassionate and respectful parent to my children. At the age of seven, I was in the middle of a very bitter divorce battle; some of which is chronicled in the book CHILDREN IN THE CROSSFIRE: The Tragedy of Parental Kidnaping by Sally Abrahms. Through pure determination, I have been able to convert the helplessness I felt as a child into empowerment. I have been able to gain an awareness from those experiences to be the type of parent that my children really need.
Parenting
As soon as my first child was conceived, I gravitated to a very attached and peaceful parenting style. I had all-natural, midwife-attended births; two of which were homebirths. My children were extended nursers and shared a family bed. I realized very quickly that children have a very clear non-verbal language that most parents aren’t even aware of and this has played a major role in how I learned to be a connected, intuitive parent.
Homeschooling
Having always possessed an avid love for learning, I put myself through college. I attended Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts where I received a degree in Foreign Affairs with a concentration in Environmental Science and a minor in Communications. Since graduating college I have led a very unschooly, life-learning type of life. I have lived in five different states where I have continued to learn about anything that interests me. I am self-taught in database programming, website design, classic muscle car restoration, knitting and is currently learning how to play the bass guitar and sew. I also have a continued love of history and enjoy visiting local historic sites in New England. Every spring my family and I plant and tend a pretty sizable organic garden. Most recently, due to my interest in herbalism, I wrote and self-published a book called The Herbal Beverage Book. It has been through my own continued life learning that I realized that homeschooling was not only the most respectful but most fulfilling way to raise my children and it still is working for us.
